For metaphor

February rolled in as it always does with a gust of air, you just never know whether it will carry a hint of spring or a mighty blast of winter. I am almost afraid to admit that DRS was hoping for the latter. With our forthcoming outdoor installation We are water, keeping things under 32F/0C will give us a little more flexibility in exploring our project, and of course, increase the range of time our audiences may engage with it. It's made of ice you see.

Even in the making of this piece, the warmth from the human body on these little ice bodies creates an ungraspability which leaves us wondering - where will these little bodies end up? Eventually of course, as water. The transition from water to ice, the seemingly soft transition - the upward thrusting release of the transition to vapor, or the twisting, squeezing of water as it pushes itself to the edges of a space into a solid.

The states of water - three which are common to us - are part of the incredible uniqueness of this essential part of the formula for human life, offer us metaphors for transitions in our own lives, in our ideas, in our process. Often we begin fluidy, firming up, and finally opening, allowing our work to be released into the world around us. Or we emerge from the mist, flowing around and through everything and everyone. From the molecular to the mundane understanding of water, we are water and we hold within us strong meaning and purpose for it in our lives, whether these surface often and much, or swim beneath the surface, quietly making life possible.

We are water will come out, whether it lasts three hours or three days, whether they will slide, fall and crash, slowly drop into new accumulations as water, freeze again as night falls, thaw and evaporate in late winter sunshine.

And that's all we know. Today.
